Hidden behind the bustling cross-section of Virginia Routes 7 and 29 are the quiet, tree-lined streets of the City of Falls Church. Extend beyond the City Center to Greater Falls Church and savor skyscraper views of the countryside, shopping meccas known nationwide and ethnic eateries that feel like you’ve journeyed to another country.
Awarded as a Tree City USA annually since 1977 by the National Arbor Day Foundation, for, among other things, its comprehensive forestry program, preservation and tree replacements, the City’s oak-lined avenues and parks are a retreat from busy DC nine miles or a few stops away from its two Metro train stations. Sixteen-thousand trees shade this 2 square-mile enclave.
A striking mix of new buildings blends with comforting historic styles in condos, restaurants, boutiques and stores, such as Brown’s Hardware, a fixture since 1883, along the City Center’s crossroads, Broad (Rt. 7) and Washington (Rt. 29) Streets. City Center is burgeoning, but maintaining its hometown character. New high-rises stand near mid-rises, many of both with transitional facades. Many are getting ready for sale.
Drive west on Rt. 7 as it turns into Leesburg Pike in Greater Falls Church for the Tyson’s Malls. You can buy just about anything there and in surrounding major retail discount stores up and down the Pike. Tysons II, especially, sports one-of-a-kind items. Greater Falls Church lies in Fairfax County, often cited as one of the wealthiest in the nation. Indulge at Fairfax Square, home to Tiffany’s and other luxury stores and premiere restaurants.
Venture east toward the Bailey’s Crossroads’ skyscrapers. Minutes away lies Old Town, Alexandria, and the Potomac River waterfront, as Rt. 7 turns into King Street.
Here, Greater Falls Church becomes more diverse, economically and culturally. Little strip malls enclose treasures from the Middle East, Thailand, Central and South America, India and Vietnam. Transport yourself in a Middle Eastern hookah bar or search for fresh fish you’ve never seen in an Asian or Indian grocery store.
Stop often near the border of Falls Church City, in Eden Center, or “Little Vietnam.” Dining guides advise on what to choose and what’s contained in the dishes, many of which are described in Vietnamese followed by a brief English name. It’s an adventure though many will taste familiar. Discover the riches inside the mall, including jewelry and gifts.
Falls Church City is so small it shares many services with Fairfax County and adjacent Arlington. Wholly its own though is George Mason High School, consistently ranked in the Top 10 in the area and nationwide.
DC and outlaying area residents drop in to the City for its cozy restaurants, casual to fine, and music. It won’t take too long, however, to begin to notice familiar faces—residents are loyal to their proprietors.
Get involved in the Falls Church-Kokolopori (Democratic Republic of Congo) Sister City Partnership developed to benefit the rainforest. Students, local politicos, business persons and residents participate in the Partnership’s numerous projects from education to art and ways to help each other. The City is known for many firsts, including the founding of the first rural NAACP by E.B. Henderson, whose descendants still live here and are active in the community.
Much of the City’s close community life takes place around City Hall, a short walk from City Center. Festivals abound year-round, including Civil War Day at Cherry Hill Farmhouse, an 1845 Greek Revival style open for outdoor concerts, lectures and teas. Every Saturday local farmers converge around City Hall for a Farmer’s Market. It’s a favorite gathering place to taste, learn what’s fresh for the season and just stand around and talk. |
